BDSM, Feminism and Erika’s guest appearance on XConfessions!

Sex and politics. Two worlds that although intrinsically interlaced (“the personal is political” after all) are rarely seen as a sexy combination of subjects. Bring up gender politics or feminism at an orgy and you will literally hear the collective sigh and the hard-ons receding.

This week on XConfessions Erika Lust has decided to face this – and with a subject as controversial to those who only engage in vanilla sex, as it is natural discussion for those regularly engaging in BDSM. In her newest film, Feminist and Submissive, she brings together a round table of women, from sex workers to journalists, to discuss the seemingly dichotomous subject: “Can you be a feminist and submissive?”

But don’t worry, there’s still plenty of sex! Accompanying this round table in Lust’s longest film for XC yet is a BDSM (an overlapping abbrevation of Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, Sadism and Masochism) scene featuring the hugely experienced Dom, Master Owen Gray, and the sweet yet fiercely intelligent Lina Bembe as the submissive.

The round table includes Lina in the discussion, so as an audience we are shown her full consent and what’s more, not just a quick 30 seconds of her confirming consent, but a long discussion of the intricacies and personal kinks of her fetishism. Before shooting the scene, Lust and Owen discussed with Lina her boundaries and limits, what she was interested in exploring and what she was nervous to explore. In his interview with Lust this week, Owen discusses working on his first BDSM shoot with Lust, and explains how well his and Lina’s preferences in terms of kink worked well together. They both wanted sensual, passionate and fun play, rather than only focussing on pain or degradation.

Within the round table we also have Erika herself hosting the discussion, plus Silvia Rubí, who is experienced in both topping and subbing; Viktoria Vaar, a sex worker, feminist and activist who recently shot her first ever adult film with Lust for “Let Me See Your Ponytail Swing“; and Daisy Bata, a journalist and writer with experience writing under pseudonyms on the subjects of feminism, politics and kink.

For those new to BDSM, or unsure of it’s role within sex and relationships, this film is an enlightening and inspiring journey that may convince you to try a few things out yourself… and for those already within the BDSM world, it is a wonderfully fresh take on the usual mainstream work that there is a plethora of on the internet!
